A “Standing O” for our Nurses!

May 6-12 is National Nurses Week, so we’re sending a big thank you to all of our nurses – we couldn’t do it without you!

Liver Transplant Summer Session, June 2010, Well Shell Photos (29)Each year, more than 100 nurses make camp possible for thousands of children. These highly-trained and dedicated professionals bring with them all their medical expertise, but scrubs and the sterile atmosphere of a hospital are nowhere to be found! When children arrive at camp, their first stop is the Well Shell where they meet their doctor, who may be sporting flip-flops and a cowboy hat, and nurses, who might be mistaken for super heroes, as capes are encouraged!

Our nurses ensure campers’ days are fun-filled and interrupted as little as possible by their medical needs. The outstanding medical support of The Painted Turtle is what allows these children to attend camp. Nurses understand that campers are there to make friends and laugh and fly down the zip line, not think about their next IV. By normalizing the practice of taking medications, our nurses help campers see that their medical treatment doesn’t make them so different.

After camp, many parents report that their children show improved medical compliance because of the self-confidence they’ve developed at The Painted Turtle.
